NORTH CONWAY, NH -- Children Unlimited celebrated the opening of their new rain garden on Monday, August 18, 2025, at their Conway location, 182 West Main Street. The Mt. Washington Valley Chamber of Commerce (MWVCC) joined in the occasion by hosting a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
MWVCC Executive Director Chris Proulx led the ribbon cutting with Children Unlimited staff and board members in attendance including Executive Director Ardis Yahna, Board President Barbara Campbell and Ralph Lutjen, Board Treasurer.
Dozens of community members joined the celebration and toured the rain garden and the Children Unlimited facility.
Yahna stated, “We are thrilled to unveil the newly renovated rain garden in partnership with the Chamber of Commerce. This space now includes a beautifully constructed amphitheater, a 48-inch-high wall built from landscape timbers, and expanded, relocated garden beds. These enhancements are key to our mission of offering a rich, hands-on educational experience for our preschoolers, connecting them with nature and outdoor learning.”
According to an educational placard posted on their grounds, a rain garden is a planted depression that allows rainwater runoff from impervious surfaces to soak into the ground. The deep rooted plants that are used in rain gardens are tolerant of local climate, soil and water conditions. These plants are a selection of wetland edge vegetation that can sustain extremes in moisture and concentrations of nutrients. The flowers and shrubs take up excess water flowing into the rain garden.
